planetary bow.

Collisionless bow shock waves exist in front of each planet probed by spacecraft so far. These shocks both deflect the supersonic, or supermagnetosonic solar wind around the planets, and heat it. Part of the solar wind incoming is accelerated, or ‘reflected’ by the shock back along magnetic field lines towards the sun.
